The space available at the Working Women's Hostel like the mess hall which is unoccupied for a few hours daily is used to conduct regular classes for school going girls from the nearby densely populated areas of Pandavnagar, Wadarwadi, Janawadi and Gunjalwadi. Not being educated, their parents are unable to render academic help. If girls fail, they are taken out of school and are likely to be married off early.
With scholastic help from 'Sucharita' the expectation is that the girls would pass std. Xth, thus avoiding early marriage. On the other hand they would become stronger individuals, better informed mothers and might get better employment opportunity. It is hoped that they would become bolder and would learn how to seek information or help when faced with problems, later in life. The emphasis of the 'Sucharita' activity is therefore twofold. For girls from Stds. VIII, IX, X and XII, regular classes are conducted for 2 to 3 hours everyday in the two subjects of Maths and English which most girls find to be difficult. Science and Social Studies are also taught as needed. This academic core is supplemented by many other activities. 'Sucharita' has a good library of story books for home lending to encourage the reading habit. A past student of Sucharita manages the library. Vernacular newspaper supplements and weeklies are provided by friends and well wishers. Sucharita also subscribes to magazines like 'Kishor' and 'Miloon Saryajani' - This rich reading material is valued by the students of Sucharita. Saturdays are for learning knitting embroidery, mending; with drawing and painting for those interested. Besides this, programs pertaining to health, hygiene, nutrition, such as medical check ups and lectures are arranged. Specifically to enable the girls to reach an understanding of the teen-age turmoil, the physical and emotional aspects of sex are addressed openly and the girls are encouraged to ask questions. 'Sucharita' makes good use of the varied learning resources that a place like Pune easily offers. We take the girls to exhibitions, institutions, manufacturing units or up the hill nearby. Very competent resource persons teach mask making, Diwali lanterns, paper flowers or greetings cards. Cycling is taught. People who through grit and effort have now created a good 'present' for themselves are specially introduced to the girls. Their own self expression is encouraged. Funny games are organized and prizes given. A whole day trip too is organized, each year. For all this, just a small fee is taken from the students. The members of Sucharita are well qualified, dedicated and experienced teachers, totally committed to the welfare of the girls. They donate their time and skills unstintingly. Hence, Sucharita has had very good results over the ten plus years of its existence. It is noteworthy that most students have passed the Xth some with marks higher than 70%. Some of the girls are studying further, while a few are gain fully employed. One girl is doing 3rd year engineering in Cummins College. The girls really enjoy studying in the pretty, clean and serene surroundings of the working women' hostel. It is such a contrast from the cramped space and the din of their own homes. The hostel staff and inmates understand if sometimes, the enthusiasm of the girls becomes noisy. Perhaps someday, a 'Sucharita' student will be one of the graduate working girls living at the U.W.A. Hostel and a member of our Association.
