The University Women’s Association (UWA) stands for the empowerment of women at the university level. By providing financial assistance to the truly needy and deserving students from among the Under Graduates (UG), Post Graduates (PG) and Doctoral (PhD) levels we nurture and guide them towards a suitable career. The aim of the Scholarship Committee of UWA is to do the hand-holding till they are comfortably launched into the world.

Sixty years ago UWA was formed and the organization has educated and helped empower hundreds of young women through their scholarships scheme. Many such are now members of UWA themselves. Scholarships given each year differ according to the subject chosen, number of deserving candidates and the need of the awardees.

The eligibility criteria and the information required while applying are hereby spelt out – (i) Pune University students across all courses/mediums to be given first preference, (ii) there will be an age limit for applicants, (iii) Candidates submitting late/incomplete forms will not be considered, (iv) if candidates from SC/ST/ OBC categories apply then they must furnish proof, (v) if they are getting aid from elsewhere then she must specify amount, duration, and purpose, (vi) priority will be given to merit, scope of study, future growth and employability potential after study.

Application forms will be readily available at the UWA Office on the dates mentioned in the advertisements announcing the scholarships in the local newspapers. We propose to give the UG scholarships on/by 15th August each year from 2010 onwards and the PG and PhD scholarships on 26th January each year also from 2010 onwards. The newspaper ads and the selection process will be done 2 months prior to this. We will be selecting 32 students at the UG level, 5 at the Pg level and 5 at the PhD level.

The quantum of funds will differ according to the level where the aspirant is at, as also the merit and need of each case. As the scholarship amounts will be substantial the money will be disbursed in 2-4 installments. We want to ensure sincerity of purpose and correct use of funds.

We welcome new members into UWA and our Scholarship Cell. Please feel free to associate with us when we come calling at your college in the hope of tapping talent and endeavor. We will keep all those associated with the candidates informed about their progress so that we can together help further her career and advancement in life.

Join the Cause

Of course to achieve all of the above we require a generous flow of funds from as many as can help. The results of your contributions, however, may not manifest till many years down the line when the wealth of the returns will be measured in terms of the confidence, competence and earning capacity of the awardees comes to fruition. We are all doing our bit for a better tomorrow. Do please join hands with us.
Here’s how you can help:-

This year, being the beginning of the Diamond Jubilee Celebrations, is special and we are giving a substantial amount to the three selected candidates.

Meet Ayodhya Krishsagar, a PhD scholar and the daughter of a Class IV employee of the Pune University. She is doing a study of the “Pollutants in the Mula River in Pune City” and is suggesting remedies for domestic waste water management. Thin and wiry but with a 1000 watt smile she wants to spread awareness of her work among her people. We detected a winner beneath the dust and toil.
Then there is Gouri Katre, a young mother who keeps her child at a crèche all day as she and her husband struggle to complete their PhDs in Environmental Pollutants in our city. A quiet determination and the will to use her doctorate judiciously in pursuance of a career made her stand out.
And finally there is Shwetaa Phutane, a champion Gold Medalist in Air Pistol shooting from Pune District, who is doing her M. Sc. in Environmental Science. She knows that not all the Gold Medals will get her a decent career in life. Her father has sacrificed his domestic comforts by sending his wife and two children from Patan to Pune in pursuance of quality education. We know will succeed in her studies as she did in her sport
