The most prestigious project planned by UWA Pune in the silver jubilee year 1975 was to build a working women's hostel. It had been our dream child for many years. A request for land was made to the collector's office which was received enthusiastically. The then collector Shri P. Subramaniam offered a very centrally located plot which had been just cleared of a zopadpatti.
Frantic efforts were made to raise the money from among the U.W.A members and it stands to the credit of the Association that the members came up with the entire amount needed to pay for the land each giving as much as they could as an interest free loan.
Working Women's Hostel - Celebrating Silver Jubilee Year 2004
Hostel Committee had been convened in 1977. The construction costs were raised by this committee through a souvenir. It was a tremendous task raising funds but for the sincere and tenacious efforts of the then President, Dr. Prabha Deodhar supported by her Managing Committee and the Chairman of the Hostel Project Committee, Smt Kaushalya Sangtani and the members friends and well wishers of U.W.A Pune. By February 1979 the Building was complete.
The Working Womens Hostel is run on a no profit no loss basis. Whatever extra income we have got has been judiciously invested in Trust Funds. These are used to run the activities for the local community people who come from the the less privileged section of society.
